Our Family Lines will help you keep writing.

Stuck in the (memoir) middle

Now that we’ve kicked 2022 to the curb, what are you looking forward to in 2023? Did you make any New Year’s resolutions? It’s not too late. Here, I’ll give you one. Get back to writing your story.

Writer's Block

Our Family Lines has written a few posts on starting your story. But what if you’re stuck in the middle of your memoirs? Staring at a blank page and then remembering the dog needs a walk or you need a drink of water or your friend needs to see that cat meme. All of these are excuses not to write. It’s procrastination. Also known as writer’s block.

Winter is a great time to get writer’s block. You can tell yourself you don’t have to write in January. You’re recharging after a busy festive season. Or it’s cold and you can’t be expected to compose anything when the outdoor temperatures will freeze your brain. Or you’ll be more inspired in February (yeah, right). Stop with the justifications. Just. Go. Write.

Keep Going

That’s all you have to do. You don’t even have to write a new story. Read over the stuff you’ve already written and give it an edit. Refresh your memory of why you’re writing. Doesn’t it feel great to have some of your words on the page already? Keep going.

Maybe you’re scared that once your memoirs are done, people will read them. Or maybe that it’s people won’t read them. Nevertheless, be brave. Keep going.

You sat down and started writing your life story because you want to leave something of yourself. It could be life lessons, experiences, career knowledge, whatever it is – you have a desire to tell it. Keep going.

There could be a time when you won’t be able to share your tales of adventure and woe. So, keep going. Write until you reach the end (which could be 2024).
